The Upside Down has officially conquered the digital world one last time. Following the release of its series finale on New Year’s Eve, Stranger Things Season 5 has made a thunderous entry into Netflix’s Most Popular English-language TV list of all time.
With 105.7 million views and counting, the final season has already secured the No. 9 spot, knocking Fool Me Once off the chart and surpassing the first season of The Night Agent.
To rank its most popular titles, Netflix tracks viewership over a 91-day period. Because Stranger Things followed a staggered release, the viewership for each segment is calculated independently. Consequently, the window for Volume 1 closes on February 24, while the finale remains eligible for the all-time list until the end of March.
With nearly three months of eligibility remaining, the show is poised to climb significantly higher. It currently trails Stranger Things 4 (No. 3 with 140.7 million views) and the cultural juggernaut Wednesday Season 1 (No. 1 with 252.1 million views).
In a rare move, Netflix also dropped the two-hour finale in approximately 600 cinemas across the US and Canada. This “event cinema” strategy proved to be a massive success, earning over $25 million in just two days (December 31 – January 1).
Interestingly, due to contractual workarounds, many of these tickets were sold as concession vouchers, allowing theatres to retain the revenue while still offering fans a communal opening-night experience.
The Stranger Things fever has also triggered a massive binge-watching wave across the entire series.
While Season 5 claimed the crown, the latest Netflix India Top 10 rankings show The Great Indian Kapil Show: Season 4 (#2), Single Papa (#3), and Cashero (#4) steadily climbing the viewership charts.
Moreover, the first three seasons of Stranger Things are also featured on Netflix India’s weekly Top 10 list. Stay tuned for more updates.
