Stranger Things S5: Real Star Finally Takes Spotlight

Since Stranger Things’ debut in 2016, the show’s narrative has mostly focused on Eleven (Millie Bobby Brown), Mike (Finn Wolfhard), the chemistry between Lucas (Caleb McLaughlin) and Max (Sadie Sink), the bromance between Dustin (Gaten Matarazzo) and Steve (Joe Keery), the off-and-on romance between Nancy (Natalia Dyer) and Jonathan (Charlie Heaton), and the rest of the Hawkins crew. It’s not that the character arc of Will Byers (Noah Schnapp) hasn’t been touched on; it’s just that he is yet to receive the spotlight he truly deserves.

As we move toward the premiere of Season 5, Netflix seems to have finally shifted its promotional strategy to focus more on Will (about damn time!). Naturally, this has fueled a powerful current of online theories suggesting what fans have believed all along: the story that began with Will’s disappearance must also end with his final stand.

Even the Duffer Brothers have confirmed that Will will be central to Stranger Things’ conclusion. Ross Duffer, in particular, has pointed out that Will’s emotional arc will play a key role in shaping the final season.

This isn’t just fan service; it’s a long-awaited narrative culmination. Will was not just the first victim, but the Patient Zero of the Upside Down’s infection in Hawkins.

Will ended up spending a week in the Upside Down in Season 1, followed by his possession by the Mind Flayer in Season 2. These events forged a unique, lasting connection between Will and the Upside Down. While his friends started focusing on their separate and romantic lives, Will always remained the same, yet simultaneously very different and unique from others. Season 4’s final moments show that he still possesses the unsettling ability to feel Vecna (Jamie Campbell Bower).

Especially after Season 2, Will’s struggles became more internal, including his suppressed feelings, his fear of growing up, and his painful sense of being left behind. Season 5 promises to confront these vulnerabilities head-on, giving him an emotional resolution that goes beyond just saving the world.

Season 5 uniquely positions Will as the ultimate weapon in the fight against Vecna. In the early seasons, his friends and loved ones rescued him from evil. Now, it’s Will’s time. He has travelled a long way, transforming from the Damsel in Distress in early seasons to the brave and wise son of Joyce (Winona Ryder).

As per fan theories, Will’s connection with the hive mind of the Upside Down makes him more important than ever before. He may be the only one capable of locating or mounting a strong fight against Vecna. Some theories even indicate that Will may end up sacrificing himself to take down Vecna for good. The Duffer Brothers have already teased that some important characters may die in the final season, and many fans believe that Will may be one of them.

While this narrative, a final, selfless sacrifice, is dramatically satisfying, it would also be heartbreaking. It would bring Will’s story full circle. Even Noah Schnapp has teased that the finale will leave fans “truly devastated,” suggesting an ending that, while fulfilling, will be intensely emotional.

The stage is set for a monumental conclusion. The saga of Stranger Things began with a boy who vanished, and as the show concludes, that same boy, Will Byers, is finally ready to save the world that nearly destroyed him. This time, Hawkins won’t be saving Will; Will will be saving Hawkins. Stay tuned for more updates.
