The new teaser trailer for HBO’s The Last of Us Season 2 has been released by Max, revealing that the sophomore season will debut in April this year. Season 1 premiered in January 2023 and was met with strong acclaim from both viewers and critics. Given how the first season finale ended, it seems like Season 2 has plenty in store for the show’s fanbase—and perhaps even more.
The Season 1 finale saw Joel (Pedro Pascal) saving Ellie (Bella Ramsey) from the Firefly soldiers and hospital staff, who intended to extract the growing Cordyceps inside her brain to develop a cure for the infection. However, the procedure would have resulted in Ellie’s death, as the Cordyceps could only be removed surgically. Unwilling to let that happen, Joel killed the hospital’s surgeons and many Firefly soldiers to rescue Ellie. When Ellie woke up from anaesthesia, Joel lied to her, claiming the hospital had found other immune individuals for their study.
The reveal of this horrifying truth will likely devastate Ellie’s conscience and could further strain her relationship with Joel. Additionally, Season 2 marks the debut of Kaitlyn Dever as Abby, who is determined to exact vengeance on Joel after he killed her father, one of the workers at the hospital.
Ellie will also find a love interest in Dina (Isabela Merced) in Season 2. Other new characters set to appear in the upcoming season include Jesse (Young Mazino), Manny (Danny Ramirez), Mel (Ariela Barer), Nora (Tati Gabrielle), Isaac Dixon (Jeffrey Wright), and Catherine O’Hara in an undisclosed role.
Early rumours suggested that The Last of Us Season 2 would be released in the latter half of 2025. However, the latest update hints that Part 3 (Season 3) may arrive sooner than expected.
