Superman’s early digital release, while making sense financially, has not been well received by a large number of the film’s supporters, as many believe this tactic could negatively impact its ongoing box office collections. However, filmmaker James Gunn has revealed the real reason for sending the first big theatrical release of the DCU to digital this early: Peacemaker Season 2. The sophomore chapter of John Cena’s Chris Smith also serves as a continuation of the events that took place in Gunn’s Superman.
Plenty of Peacemaker Season 2 cast members are reprising their roles from Superman, including Nathan Fillion (Guy Gardner, aka Green Lantern), Isabela Merced (Kendra Saunders, aka Hawkgirl), Sean Gunn (Maxwell Lord), and Frank Grillo (Rick Flag Sr.).
Grillo, by the way, has a much larger role in the upcoming season, as he seems dead set on apprehending Peacemaker and exacting vengeance for the death of his son, Rick Flag Jr. (played by Joel Kinnaman in The Suicide Squad). The latest red-band trailer for the season reveals that Chris has access to a dimension portal built by Lex Luthor, which allows him to travel across different universes with ease.
All of this makes it clear that the events of Superman heavily influence the storyline of Peacemaker Season 2. So, releasing Superman digitally this early makes sense, as it allows viewers to catch up and prepare for the new season.
We are now less than a week away from Season 2’s release on HBO Max (JioCinema in India). Early reviews for the season are extremely positive, with many critics calling it even better than the critically acclaimed debut.
In fact, Season 2 currently holds a perfect “Fresh” score of 100% on Rotten Tomatoes, based on 35 certified reviews. That means the new season is already off to a brilliant start and is set to thrill DC fans.
