Paramount and Tom Cruise are in talks of making a sequel to the 1990 racing flick Days of Thunder. However, the movie was not a commercial success as a whole when it was released; the sequel might just be a good way to reinitiate interest in the property. The interesting point is that the movie is coming back in the middle of the “remake/sequel epidemic” that has plagued Hollywood. So it is debatable how successful this might turn out to be.
It won’t be the first of Tom Cruise’s 90s movies getting a rebrand. It’s been a couple of years since Top Gun: Maverick was released, and it definitely was a massive hit. Top Gun, too, was a Paramount production.
It is to be seen where the project goes, as it is still in talks. Prior to this, the franchise was supposed to be rebooted as a series, but the series stayed in production till it was scrapped eventually. There are multiple factors that may present an issue. For instance, Cruise has a busy schedule. The actor is set to make his next appearance in the next Mission Impossible film for Universal Studios, which will have a sequence actually shot in space.
It’s been quite some time since the racing films last graced the big screen. And the audience seems to love the high-octane films like this. Ford vs. Ferrari from 2019 was a massive hit. The prospect of NASCAR racing flicks making a return sounds nice, but it would have been appreciated if it were an original movie.
