The future of Uncharted 2 looks much brighter following a new update from producer Charles Roven, who revealed that the sequel to the 2022 movie has entered the early production stage. Based on Naughty Dog’s popular video game franchise, the first movie starred Tom Holland as Nathan “Nate” Drake and Mark Wahlberg as Victor “Sully” Sullivan.
According to Deadline, Roven has provided an optimistic update about Uncharted 2. The script for the sequel is currently under development. However, its filming schedule will depend on when Holland provides his availability to Sony, considering his jam-packed filming commitments. Holland is currently working with his real-life girlfriend and actress Zendaya on Spider-Man 4. The globally popular duo is also set to star in Christopher Nolan’s next project, which features talents such as Matt Damon, Anne Hathaway, Charlize Theron, and Robert Pattinson. Here’s what Roven had to say:
“We’re working on a script, but we’re going to have to wait now for Chris Nolan’s movie that Tom and Zendaya are doing. And then right after that, he and Zendaya are doing Spider-Man. I think both those movies are releasing on the same day or the week after each other or something. It’s another potential Barbenheimer.”
Roven’s comments indicate that the future of Uncharted 2 may not be as grim as many believed, given the highly polarised critical reception of the first film. Holland’s star power certainly contributed to the 2022 movie’s box office success, allowing it to earn over $407 million globally. However, the film received strong criticism from both viewers and critics for its lack of chemistry between the leading duo, weak villain, poor CGI, haphazard storyline, and other issues. That said, Holland’s performance was widely praised.
Video game adaptations often have a hit-or-miss reputation, but Uncharted’s box office performance suggests that there is demand for such adaptations. It seems unlikely that the franchise will end with just two films. The sequel will need to be more ambitious and thrilling than the first, with a bolder storyline and action sequences. Stay tuned for more updates.
