Gladiator 2 is all but ready to hit theaters worldwide. The highly anticipated sequel will revolve around Lucius Verus (Paul Mescal), who, like his legendary father Maximus (played by Russell Crowe in the original 2000 movie), becomes a celebrated gladiator. Lucius will find himself surrounded by a diverse array of characters, one of whom is Macrinus (Denzel Washington).
So, who is Macrinus? Director Ridley Scott and promotional clips for Gladiator 2 have confirmed that Washington’s Macrinus will be one of the antagonists. The only question is: how cruel will he be? Based on the glimpses we’ve seen of Washington’s character so far, it’s safe to say he isn’t as honourable or respectable as Maximus’ buyer, Antonius Proximo (played by Oliver Reed in the first film). In fact, he seems more cunning and malicious than Proximo.
It has been confirmed that Washington’s Macrinus is a well-known Roman arms dealer in Gladiator 2. Additionally, he shows interest in other unsavoury businesses across the empire. Brimming with ambition and intelligence, he is also known for his ruthless streak. The sequel’s latest trailer also reveals his intentions to usurp the throne from Emperor Geta (Joseph Quinn) and Emperor Caracalla (Fred Hechinger).
Macrinus was a real historical figure, according to ancient Roman texts. He was a Roman emperor who ruled from 217 to 218 AD, notable for being the first emperor not of senatorial rank and the first to rise from an equestrian background. Macrinus came to power after the assassination of Caracalla, an event in which he was likely involved. He declared himself emperor but lacked the necessary support of the Roman Senate and the military, leading to an unstable reign. Additionally, his reforms, including cutting military pay, made him unpopular with the army.
In his recent interview with Variety, Scott confirmed some important details about Denzel’s Macrinus.
“Denzel is an arms dealer who supplies food for the armies in Europe, supplies wine and oil, makes steel, makes spears, weapons, cannons, and catapults. So he is a very wealthy man. Instead of having a stable of racehorses, he has a stable of gladiators.”
Denzel Washington’s Macrinus is set to play a key role in Gladiator 2. He may manipulate Lucius to further his ambitions of seizing the Roman Empire’s throne. We’ll have to wait and see how it unfolds. The sequel is scheduled to hit theaters worldwide on November 22. Stay tuned for more updates.
