In a surprising turn of events, the South Korean sci-fi disaster epic The Great Flood has surged to the #2 spot on Netflix India’s weekly charts. Despite a lukewarm, mediocre reception from critics, the film has managed to capture the Indian audiences, proving that high-concept K-content has a unique, almost invincible pull in the subcontinent.
Directed by Kim Byung-woo (The Terror Live), the film is a claustrophobic survival thriller set in a submerged apartment building during Earth’s final days. Kim Da-mi (The Witch, Our Beloved Summer) plays An-na, an AI researcher and single mother trapped in a sinking high-rise.
As floodwaters rise, An-na must protect her young son while a security officer, Hee-jo (Park Hae-soo of Squid Game fame), arrives with a mysterious mission: An-na’s research is the key to humanity’s survival.
One of the primary reasons behind The Great Flood’s instant prominence in India is Park Hae-soo, best known for his outstanding work in Squid Game. Whereas Kim Da-mi has a massive cult following from her romantic K-dramas. Additionally, disaster cinema has always had a strong appeal among audiences.
Despite mediocre reviews, the film’s success in India highlights the evolving tastes of the Indian viewer. We are now in an era where high-concept confusion is often forgiven if the emotional stakes are high and the production quality is world-class.
