Why Unfamiliar Is Netflix’s Latest Binge-Worthy Thriller

Germany has a knack for producing compelling thrillers, and its latest export, Unfamiliar, is proving to be no exception. Currently sitting at #7 on the Netflix India Trending charts, the series is quickly becoming the go-to weekend binge for fans of high-stakes espionage and domestic drama.

The series follows Simon (Felix Kramer) and Meret (Susanne Wolff), a seemingly ordinary couple running a restaurant in Berlin. But their domestic bliss is a carefully constructed façade. In reality, they are former BND (German intelligence) agents who are officially “dead” to the world.

Their quiet lives are shattered on their daughter Nina’s 16th birthday, when a wounded man arrives at their door, dragging them back into the fallout of a botched mission in Belarus from their past.

Fans of the cult hit Dark will immediately recognise Andreas Pietschmann (who played “The Stranger”). In Unfamiliar, he portrays Jonas Auken, bringing the same brooding, magnetic intensity that made him a global favourite.

Much like The Americans or Mr & Mrs Smith, the show isn’t just about gunfights. It’s about a marriage crumbling under the weight of sixteen years of lies.

With only six episodes (clocking in at about 50 minutes each), it’s a tight, action-packed ride that doesn’t overstay its welcome.

The overall response to Unfamiliar has been mostly positive on social media and across the internet. If you enjoy stories where the past is never truly buried, and the good guys have to do very bad things to protect their families, the answer is a resounding yes.

While the show hits some familiar spy tropes, it reassembles them into something that feels fresh, polished, and deeply emotional. Stream Unfamiliar now on Netflix.
