A British crime drama set in a small town in West Yorkshire that won BAFTA for Best drama series for two seasons straight is something you just cannot miss. We are talking about ‘Happy Valley’ created by Sally Wainwirght who is known for her dramas set in her native West Yorkshire and featuring strong female characters.
‘Happy Valley’ is a compelling crime thriller starring Sarah Lancashire as Catherine Cawood, a police sergeant in a small town where drunkards, drug addicts and teenage pregnancies are a way of life. Like most other police procedural dramas Catherine deals with her own personal struggles while solving these serious crimes.
‘Happy Valley’ very well acknowledges the tight knit community in small towns where everyone knows everyone and most of the times crimes happen not just close to you but with someone you knew.
The show has a 100% rating on Rotten Tomatoes and has received overwhelmingly positives response from critics and public alike. Despite some graphic content, that was objected to by some, ‘Happy Valley’ soon became a word-of-the-mouth hit and was one of the most watched show in its premiere week for BBC One.
If you have loved shows like Mare of Eastown and love police procedural crime drama, ‘Happy Valley’ should definitely be on your watchlist. All three seasons of ‘Happy Valley’ are currently available on Prime Video.
