Jacob Elordi and Margot Robbie have been cast as the lead actors for the new ‘Wuthering Heights’ adaptation and while some audiences are overjoyed, there are some who are disappointed with the decision.
Some netizens say that both the actors do not have the ‘insane’ characteristics required for the roles even though Robbie has played Harley Quinn (what would be more insane!). But one bigger problem with the casting is the colour of Heathcliff.
The book clearly says that Heathcliff is brown in colour and is of mixed race and had to suffer from racism all his life for that. But casting an Australian white actor in the role of Heathcliff seems to be ridiculous. People have demanded a change in the casting and even though they are perfectly satisfied with the performances of Elordi, making him a Heathcliff does not really work. Previously, Tom Hardy had played Heathcliff and there is a long history of the role being played by white actors.
While there are controversies about many popular white characters being portrayed as Black in latest adaptations from Disney or Netflix, here is something totally different happening with ‘Wuthering Heights’.
The internet is flooding with posts opposing the casting in the movie and at a time when there are many brown actors in Hollywood this must not be a very big problem. People are suggesting Dev Patel as a better option for Heathcliff and Monkey Man has proved that it could be a crazy great decision to take him as Heathcliff.
