With the OTT v/s Cinemas debate prevailing stronger than ever, the stunning lack of viewing options in theatres has come to view. Not just that, despite numerous theatrical screens being shut down, theatres continue to rely solely on the re-release of iconic, fan-acclaimed titles.
Just because these titles seem to be bringing in more business than what they did originally as in the intriguing cases of ‘Laila Majnu’ and ‘Tumbbad’, it does not justify the lack of original titles in theatres. Most recently, PVR announced the screening of K-Pop idol Jung Kook’s musical documentary ‘I Am Still’.
The limited release premiering only during September 21-22 had tickets go live sometime ago today. If PVR was aiming to capitalize on the gigantic yet crazy K-Pop / BTS fanbase persistent in the younger crowds throughout the country, why has the marketing been so lackluster?
Considering that it had been previously announced that the documentary would premiere in PVR cinemas last month, there has virtually been no conversation about it. Which is to say, if this is one of the few original titles to be screened in PVR halls, shouldn’t there have been at least a little more buzz about it?
Or has PVR begun relying solely on re-releases and crazed fan bases to fuel their business?
