Malayalam Cyber Crime Thriller: A Genre Gem In The Making?

It is a fact that has been proved time and time again that Malayalam-language thrillers are one of the finest produced within the country. With recent gems like ‘Kishkindha Kaandam’ and ‘Manjummel Boys’, the industry has captured hearts nationwide. Another title upcoming within the genre of well crafted Malayalam thrillers is a Girish A. D. directorial ‘I Am Kathalan’.

The film, set to release theatrically in select theatres across the country on November 7, follows Vishnu, a crazed-in-the-aftermath-of-love man who, in the desperate attempt to win back the love of his life, ends up hacking multiple servers. What starts off as an innocent albeit silly campaign for love, ends up as a dangerously risky game of revenge for Vishnu.

Apart from the fact that the trailer for the film was well received by viewers, it is, perhaps, the perfect time to release a cyber crime based thriller. This is especially considering the widespread positive response that Ananya Pandey’s ‘CTRL’ debuted to, just last month in October.

Moreover, not only are e-crime thrillers becoming more and more relatable for viewers, they make for interesting watches, much like the acclaim that shows like ‘Black Mirror’ were successful in garnering. Another reason that cyber crime thrillers are gaining popularity is that they go beyond the perceivable bounds of common imagination, and leave viewers fascinated!
