The Malayalam film industry is always expected by the audience worldwide for its aesthetics and story ideas. Its envisage may be so limitless that it even cannot afford such concepts based on its smaller scale. ‘Kathanar: The Wild Sorcerer’ is an upcoming fantasy thriller film directed and edited by Rojin Thomas and written by R. Ramanand. It is the first of two cinematic parts. The story traces the life of Kadamattathu Kathanar, a legendary 9th-century Christian priest endowed with magical powers.
The movie is reported to be the 2nd biggest movie in the Malayalam film industry where Gokulam Gopalan for Sree Gokulam Movies will be bankrolling the effort. The Prithviraj Sukumaran directorial ‘L3 or EMPURAAN’ is said to be the upcoming big-budget movie at the top of the industry, which will be produced by Antony Perumbavoor for Aashirvad Cinemas.
However, how compatible is this flick for the World cinema? The initial discussions of the crew about the production of the movie are noteworthy with the fact that this film is shot using virtual production technology in a custom-built studio, which has been reported in highly acclaimed films like James Cameroon’s ‘Avatar’.
Furthermore, the obvious release of foreign languages including Chinese, French, Korean, Italian, Russian, Indonesian, and Japanese is the justification for pan-world cinema. Again, the actors may be also from different regions who are mainly from theatre backgrounds, thereby the film allowing such a profound unification.
Actor Jayasurya is playing the titular character of the film, who is expected to give his greatest feat based on his brilliant emulations in movies like ‘Vellam’, ‘Njan Marikutty’, ‘Captain’, ‘Su Su Sudhi Vaatmeekam’, etc.
The ensemble cast will also feature actors Prabhu Deva, Anushka Shetty (in her Mollywood debut), and Vineeth Radhakrishnan respectively. The technical labour includes handling of cinematography by Neil D’Cunha, editing overseen by the director himself, and the music composed by Rahul Subramanian for which the trio has worked in previous films like ‘Home’.
