Two Movies, Different Approaches: Can It Impact Mollywood Box Office?

With the first week of the new month, two much-anticipated flicks for the Malayalam film industry are en route to big screens. How can it bring the audience and create an impact at the box office?

‘I am Kathalan’ (Eng. I am A Lover) is expected to be a techno crime-drama thriller which is directed by Girish A.D, where producers Gokulam Gopalan for Sree Gokulam Movies, Dr. Paul Varghese for Dr.Paul’s Entertainment, along with Krishnamoorthy for Dream Big Films will be bankrolling the movie.

As the trailer suggests, a different track in the narrative is expected with a concept of cyber-crimes and hacking as its main component, which has a character-driven nature, breaking the conventional nature of the director who has given previous hits like ‘Thanner Mathan Dinangal’ and ‘Premalu’, which were romantic-comedy flicks, as well as the third collaboration of the lead actor and director.

Moreover, the movie will be able to showcase a ‘stand out’ face of Mollywood with international content blended naturally into the local background with the hope of a well-written screenplay and conception.

Furthermore, the technical labour includes the handling of cinematography by Sharan Velayudhan, editing overseen by debutant Akash Joseph Varghese, and screenplay by Sajin Cherukayil, who is also a debutant. Siddartha Pradeep composed the music and background scores for the effort.

Actor Naslen will be playing the lead character for the flick alongside actors LijoMol Jose, Dileesh Pothen, Anshima Anilkumar, Sajin Cherukayil, Kiran Josey, and Vineeth Vasudevan in pivotal roles.

‘Mura’ (Eng. Tactic) is an action-drama thriller directed by Muhammed Mustafa which is his second feat with a different sub-genre. It will be produced by Riya Shibu for HR Pictures and written by Suresh Babu.

Surprisingly, what makes one expect its best taste are the people behind the technical wing. The editor Chaman Chacko’s efforts in movies like ‘Kala’ (Eng. The Weed) and ‘2018: Everyone is a Hero’ were commendable. Lyric writers Anwar Ali and Vinayak Sasikumar are the stars for their work in the industry. Makeup by Ronex Xavier and Coloring by Liju Prabhakar are popular names.

The movie will have an ensemble cast of actors Suraj Venjaramoodu, Hridhu Haroon, Maala Parvathi, Kani Kusruti, Kannan Nayar, Jobin Das, Anujith Kannan, Yedhu Krishna, P.L Thengapan, Vigneshwar Suresh, Krish Hassan, Siby Joseph and Alfred Jose respectively. A lot of the enlisted actors are new talents in the pool and are expected to give the best performances.

Furthermore, the storyline of the flick is expected to be that of a plot-driven narrative with a relevant political and economic issue that affects societal equilibrium.

Apart from introducing a new pool of young talents, the approaches by the technical as well as writing, and creative wings are expected to be distinctive and unusual based on their previous works. At the same time, the narrative will discuss the conventional happenings in the local areas of slums blended with a prevalent socio-political context.

Being an action drama in a primary context, the stunt sequences will be keenly observed which are done by PC Stunts. Music by Christy Joby should be able to lift the scenes of emotion for the fight to occur.

Despite both films being in the ‘thriller’ category, the sub-genre as well as its treatment is expected to be different with very little comparison. However, both movies are hoping for similarities in debut performances and a well-defined creative wing that can give its best.

The former will be released on the 7th and the latter on the 8th of this month respectively. Stay tuned in Binged for more updates regarding the clash.
