Can Vivekanandan Viralanu Thrive on OTT?

Despite all the hype, the box office run of “Vivekanandan Viralanu” wasn’t promising. Released on January 19, 2024, the Malayalam film has everything that could make it a hit, what with good casting and an engaging narrative. However, it fails to come through.

Hitting Prime Video gives the film a fresh lease of audience attraction. But can it really shine on the OTT platform where viewer dynamics are so markedly different?

Under Kamal’s direction, the film features an impressive cast that includes Shine Tom Chacko, Swasika VJ, Grace Antony, Mareena, Manju Pillai, Sidhartha Siva, and Johny Antony. In spite of this impressive cast, the film did not garner much interest.

One of the main reasons the film not gained much popularity in cinema halls is that it has taken up a heavy and very sensitive topic: women empowerment and the fight against sexual harassment.

Though these issues are relevant, the very execution of the film, perhaps, was not a good enough reason to attract filmgoers seeking entertainment.

Furthermore, the market released many other big banner productions around the same time period, which overshadowed the film “Vivekanandan Viralanu”.

However, the audience for OTT differs in tastes, and most of the time, there is a requirement for content apart from entertainment. “Vivekanandan Viralanu” is a pertinent social drama, therefore would attract some interested viewers in OTT interested in meaningful cinema.

The film may just find an audience that is better served by platforms such as Prime Video where viewers can choose content on their own convenience and be more willing to engage with the deep themes of the movie.

The film has received mixed reviews, appreciated for its bold approach but criticized for not rising to full potential. While “Vivekanandan Viralanu” raises an important issue of matter, its wide range of subject matter may confine its viewership to a niche. For OTT, the tight rope between meaningful content and mainstream appeal is crucial.

Also, OTT platforms offer the advantage of suggestions and targeted marketing that can reach the appropriate audience. The movie can gain traction among those that value socially conscious filmmaking if it is properly promoted.

In addition, the film’s distinctive plot and the cast’s star power would draw in audiences seeking something different from the typical content.

Although “Vivekanandan Viralanu” hasn’t done well in theatres, movie might do better on OTT platforms. However, the film will find its market and shine with the correct target audience and marketing strategy. It all comes down to understanding what the OTT viewers want and how to connect with them about it.
