In 2023, a movie called “12th Fail,” directed by the renowned Bollywood filmmaker Vidhu Vinod Chopra, became a cult soon after its release. The film, starring Vikrant Massey as the protagonist Manoj Kumar Sharma, tells the inspiring story of Sharma’s journey from being a “12th fail” to becoming an IPS officer.
Despite limited promotion during its theatrical release, the movie gained immense success at the Box Office, earning ₹66.5 crore worldwide in its 52 days of screening on around 600 screens only. Sadly, the theatrical taste of Indians is not that appreciable but Hotstar release on December 29 was the real deal.
Due to positive word-of-mouth and the accessibility provided by the OTT platform, the film quickly became a sensation. Within just three days of its release on Disney+ Hotstar, “12th Fail” became the most-watched film of 2023 on the platform. That’s pretty insane as Hotstar is the biggest OTT platform in India and we are pretty sure that there are tons of big films there. But it took 12th Fail just three days to become the most watched film of 2023. It is actually crazy.
12th Fail is a sensation that must pave the way for even more films of small scale but great content. Better late than never, the appreciation of 12th Fail is soothing.
