The 2023 Emmy Awards (75th edition) have been postponed due to the ongoing Hollywood actors’ and writers’ strikes. The event was scheduled to take place on September 18.
Though, Fox or the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences are yet to make an official announcement about this scenario. This is the first time the Emmys have been postponed in the last two decades. In 2001, the prestigious ceremony was postponed for two months in the wake of the 9/11 attacks.
The event’s rescheduling depends upon when will the Hollywood strikes culminate. Some of the latest online reports have disclosed that prominent studios are in no mood to negotiate with SAG-AFTRA and WGA. Instead, they have planned to wait until members start facing financial difficulties. In addition, AI and machine learning have attracted big studios’ attention. For instance, Disney has started hiring AI and machine learning professionals across the United States. Earlier this year, some reports revealed that Netflix was looking to hire a $900,000/year AI product manager. In addition, Sony has started seeking an AI ethics expert as well.
The above scenario will certainly add more fuel to the fire as actors and writers fear that AI will steal their jobs or studios will use AI in unethical ways.
This is what Bryan Cranston (Breaking Bad) said in his speech in Times Square some days ago:
“We’ve got a message for Mr. Iger [Disney CEO Bob Iger]: I know, sir, that you look at things through a different lens. We don’t expect you to understand who we are. But we ask you to hear us, and beyond that to listen to us when we tell you we will not be having our jobs taken away and given to robots.”
According to some insiders, Fox believes the 75th Emmy Awards may take place in November this year. On the other hand, the Television Academy wants more time. This scenario may push the ceremony to January 2024. Stay tuned for more updates.
