Nivin Pauly’s first ever direct-to-OTT release, ‘Kanakam Kaamini Kalaham’, dropped earlier in the morning, on Disney+ Hotstar… and it was decent. The film is very funny, don’t get us wrong… but in the end, it doesn’t have any real substance. The film is mainly driven by its diverse cast and some brilliant acting and they deserve to be mentioned as the best part of this film. Still, despite the “paper-thin story”, the movie does have a few setup and payoff moments – some which are obvious, while others are not so much. The subtle ones are actually quite brilliant and if you manage to catch these small clever details, they will definitely enhance your viewing experience. So without much further ado, here are 3 things you missed while watching Disney+ Hotstar’s ‘Kanakam Kaamini Kalaham’:
Pauly Jr. Pictures Fourth Wall Breaking
At the very beginning of the film, we can hear a narrator announcing the crew who worked on ‘Kanakam Kaamini Kalaham’, similar to how drama troupes used to announce the actors, writer and the director before each show. While it may look like the movie hasn’t started yet, it is actually a subtle fourth wall break that tells us we are about to watch a movie within a movie. This is later confirmed towards the end of the film when the narrator tells us what happened to the drunkard after he got stabbed and swallowed the earrings.
Manaf’s Conversation With Haripriya
We see Manaf walking near Haripriya with a bell boy trolley that has a packed bag. He then talks to Haripriya in a slightly weird manner and walks away. This scene has two setups. Manaf is a man who is in a polygamous relationship and wants more women to join is harem, which he proved by running away with the bride that showed up at the hotel later. So the “weird talk” that Manaf is doing, was actually him trying to flirt with Haripriya. The second setup was that the packed bag belonged to Manaf and he was getting ready to elope with Honey. This was what Manaf was talking about on the phone.
The Subtle Joker Reference
When Pavithran mentions the actual cost of the earrings, the camera shifts from his face to his phone cover that features the photo of probably the most infamous comic book character of all time – The Joker. This is the film’s way of showing the parallels between the fictional villain’s plans and Pavithran’s actions – which created chaos over just 1200 Rupees.
