If you are a fan of historical films, here are some nice recommendations for the weekend. These Films are underrated and not known to many. But each of them are made with dedication to history and reality and are amazing to watch.
Chittagong (2012) – Youtube, Rent:
‘Chittagong’ directed by Bedabrata Pain and starring actors like Manoj Bajpayee, Rajkumar Rao and Nawazuddin Siddiqui, Jaideep Ahlawat, tells the heart-wrenching story of the loot of the armory of Chittagong. School teacher Masterda Surya Sen and his students, all young and energetic, waged war on the British officials in the hills of Jalalabad. It is probably the only movie where all the leading male actors from GOW reunited to create another storytelling marvel. Chittagong is a must watch for any history geek.
Gandhi, My Father (2007) – JioCinema:
Directed by Feroz Abbas Khan, ‘Gandhi, My Father’ tells the story of Harilal, the son of Mahatma Gandhi. Harilal is unable to live up to the legacy of his father and is in constant guilt and self humiliation because he does not want to live under the gigantic shadow of Gandhi. Akshaye Khanna has played the role of Harilal, Darshan Jariwala and Shefali Shah have played Gandhi and Kasturba. The music is composed by Piyush Kanojia and the cinematography is handled by David McDonald. The performances are beautiful and you should not miss the movie at any cost.
Sardar (1994) – Youtube:
Directed by the wonderful filmmaker Ketan Mehta, ‘Sardar’ tells the story of the Iron man of India, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel. The film was written by noted playwright Vijay Tendulkar and has Paresh Rawal in the lead. The film shows how Patel saw the Indian freedom struggle in a negative light but then his views changed after listening to a lecture by Mahatma Gandhi. Vanraj Bhatia has composed the music for the film. Annu Kapoor has played Gandhi in it. You should not miss the film if you want to know about the contribution of Patel in India’s freedom struggle.
