With no concrete release date declared as of now, Kollywood’s highly anticipated ‘Once Upon a Time in Madras’ is on its way to theatres towards the end of summer 2024. The film, a project by debutant Prasadh Murugan encapsulates a star cast of Bharath, Abirami, Anjali Nair, Kaniha, Pavitra Lakshmi, and more.
The prime genre of the movie is described as ‘hyperlink thriller’. Which is to say, it follows a narrative wherein the characters reside in separate stories, but a connection or link exists between those disparate stories and is steadily revealed to the audience.
Once Upon a Time in Madras thus, follows the lead of well-received hyperlink thrillers like Alphonse Puthren’s Neram from 2013 and Lokesh Kanagaraj’s Kaithi from 2019.
As a vague overview, it seems as though the plot revolves around characters connected by virtue of an uncovered gun. The film proceeds by portraying the aftermath of this discovery in the lives of four individuals, this creating an intricate web of mystery. The gun acts as the hyperlink that connects characters who hail from different backgrounds and live in varied circumstances.
The director had stated that the film’s title is a reference to a real-life event that happened in 2013 in Chennai. A detailed premise of the movie is unavailable right now, however, only time will tell if that adds on to its anticipation or does the opposite.
