Hridayam is, so far, the best Malayalam film of 2022. The coming of age feature is a brilliant bittersweet, feel-good film that became the first Mollywood film to make over Rs. 50 crores this year. So without a doubt, many film industries will be looking to create a remake of this movie, similar to films like Drishyam and Manichithrathazhu. However, unlike the abovementioned films, this movie will be almost impossible to be remade immediately and here are four reasons that support this statement:
Music
Music is obviously the first reason to be on this list and one of the most important parts of this movie. While popular Malayalam movies featuring a plethora of songs are becoming a thing of the past, Hridayam is obviously not one of them. In fact, this movie has 15 songs – nearly unheard of for a Malayalam film that has been released in the past decade. And pretty much every song on this film has become a hit and it will be very hard to recreate such good music for the remakes. Quickly at least.
Cast
The cast (and even crew) of Hridayam is quite unique. It features a fairly young cast – many among them children of Malayalam superstars who have yet to gain a proper foothold in Mollywood; particularly the lead actor, Pranav Mohanlal. Finding such a unique cast for a remake that the audience members will be willing to watch, within a short period is almost impossible.
The Feels
Although Hridayam has a good story, the movie is driven by its feel-good nature. Recreating another bittersweet, feel-good feature film, especially since the story is already known and the original has done a brilliant job with it, will be a difficult task.
Time
The above mentioned “parameters” are quite hard to overcome, but they are not impossible. A dedicated team of filmmakers can make a good enough remake that can be more popular than Hridayam – especially if the movie is being remade in Hindi, Telugu or Tamil. However, that will require time, a good amount of time, which is what a remake for Hridayam will truly need.
Hridayam is running in select theatres around the country and can be strramed on Disney+ Hotstar.
