Blackmail, 2018 (Streaming on Amazon Prime Video)
Helmed by Abhinay Deo of ‘Delhi Belly’ fame, the film follows the story of a man named Dev (Irrfan Khan), whose boring life suddenly takes a drastic turn after he finds out that his wife (Kirti Kulhari) is having an extra-marital affair with another man (Arunoday Singh). He plans to exact revenge from her wife and her lover by secretly blackmailing her but gets more than what he had bargained for.
Oye Lucky! Lucky Oye!, 2008 (Streaming on Netflix)
The film follows a poor boy Lovinder ‘Lucky’ Singh, who grows up to become a charismatic and fearless thief (played by the ever-dependable Abhay Deol). The basic premise revolves around how he consistently executes his con acts and still manages to get away. It was directed by accomplished filmmaker Dibakar Banerjee, who eventually went on to direct commendable films like ‘Detective Byomkesh Bakshi’ and ‘Shanghai’. The movie also featured Paresh Rawal, Neetu Chandra, Manu Rishi, and Richa Chadda, amongst others.
Pushpak, 1987 (Streaming on Amazon Prime Video)
The silent, black comedy film features veteran actor Kamal Haasan and is directed by Singeetam Srinivasa Rao. The movie narrates the story of an unemployed graduate who grabs the opportunity to take over the life of a rich man. Things get even more interesting when an assassin mistakes him for the rich man he is hired to kill. The film is still regarded as a benchmark in creativity and Kamal Haasan’s dialogue-less lead performance and has achieved cult following over the years.
99, 2009 (Streaming on YouTube, Google Play, Apple iTunes – PPV)
Helmed by the creators of the cult show ‘The Family Man’ – the celebrated filmmaker duo Raj & DK, the movie came out in 2009 and was set in the year 1999. The plot follows two petty criminals – the underrated Kunal Khemu and the multi-talented Cyrus Broacha (of MTV Bakra fame). The two men are sent by a gangster (Mahesh Manjrekar) to recover money from a gambler (Boman Irani). However, things do not go as planned. The film also features Vinod Khanna and Soha Ali Khan in important roles.
Love Ke Liye Kuch Bhi Karega, 2001 (Streaming on Amazon Prime Video, Disney+ Hotstar, Shemaroo Me, YuppTV, MX Player)
Helmed by E. Niwas (Director – Shool), the movie is said to be loosely based on Coen Brothers’ cult film ‘Fargo’. When two cash-strapped strugglers Rahul (Fardeen Khan) and Harry (Aftab Shivdasani) try to kidnap Prakash (Saif Ali Khan), the son-in-law of a business tycoon, Prakash gives them an idea to kidnap his wife (Sonali Bendre) instead. But their plan backfires when actual kidnappers enter the picture. This was a commercially unsuccessful and underrated movie, yet an entertaining and a watchable enterprise. Try watching it on OTT in case you missed it.
