5 Highest Rated Indian Movies on Metacritic Streaming on Netflix

Globally renowned reviews aggregation website Metacritic houses a premium list of the best movies of all time which are streaming on the Netflix OTT platform. The coveted list is topped by Alfonso Cuaron’s critically acclaimed 2018 Spanish drama ‘Roma’ followed by David Fincher’s ‘The Social Network’. It also contains some Indian films and we have compiled a list of five such highest rated Indian movies on Metacritic carrying a minimum metascore of 60. All these titles are streaming on Netflix India.

Lagaan (Metascore 84, Rank 55)

Ashutosh Gowariker’s Oscar-nominated cult sports drama was set in the 1890s period amidst the backdrop of a small, drought-stricken central Indian village Champaner. The story follows a charismatic villager Bhuvan (Aamir Khan), who accepts a seemingly absurd challenge by an arrogant British commander Russel (Paul Blackthrone) to defeat the British team in a high-stakes cricket match. And if the villagers win the game, they will become free from paying exorbitant taxes.

The Disciple (Metascore 83, Rank 62)

Helmed by Chaitanya Tamhane, this critically acclaimed Marathi film narrates the story of Sharad Nerulkar (played by Aditya Modak), who has dedicated his life to becoming an Indian classical music vocalist. However, he begins to think that, despite his devotion, will he achieve the level of excellence he is aiming for. ‘Gravity’ director Alfonso Cuaron was the executive producer of the film.

RRR (Metascore 83, Rank 63)

Helmed by S.S Rajamouli, the blockbuster period action movie ‘RRR’ features Ram Charan and Jr.NTR in the lead roles and Ajay Devgn, and Alia Bhatt in pivotal roles. The film is a fictional tale set in the 1920s that revolves around two legendary Indian revolutionaries namely Alluri Sitarama Raju (played by Ram Charan) and Komaram Bheem (played by Jr. NTR).

The White Tiger (Metascore 76, Rank 152)

An adaptation of Aravind Adiga’s novel of the same name, the film’s plot revolves around an underprivileged but cunning villager Balram Halwai (played by Adarsh Gaurav), who is brainwashed by his poverty-stricken community to be a lifelong servant. To fulfill his aspirations, he travels to Dhanbad to become a driver for his affluent landlord’s son (Rajkummar Rao) and his wife (Priyanka Chopra). But his life suddenly takes a U-turn after a harsh truth about the master-servant relationship dawns upon him.

Peepli Live (Metascore 69, Rank 282)

The satirical dark comedy movie was backed by Aamir Khan and was Anusha Rizvi’s directorial debut. The plot revolves around an impoverished farmer named Natha (Omkar Das Manikpuri), who contemplates suicide as a solution for his loan getting squared off by the authorities and to save his land. But his decision soon turns out to be the media’s centre of attraction. The film features an ensemble cast including Naseeruddin Shah, Raghuvir Yadav, and Nawazuddin Siddiqui.
