5 Indian Web Series in 2019 We Wished We Could Unsee!

By Srivathsan Nadadhur - Dec 31, 2019 @ 11:12 pm

5-Indian-Web-Series-in-2019-We-Wished-We-Could--Unsee!Karoline Kamakshi – Zee5: Check Binged Rating

Widely advertised as the web series debut of veteran actress Meena, this was a forgettable action-comedy that was a disaster from the word go. A silly plot about two women trying to nab the mastermind behind the burglary of a French artefact, the painfully slow series is filled with cringe-worthy dialogues with sexual innuendos and amateurish performances. An out of form Meena, an annoying Y Gee Mahendra, with a worse story to back them, makes you wonder why this series wasn’t shelved in the scripting stages in the first place.

Nisha – Zee5: Check Binged Rating

Another Tamil web series that bit the dust, Nisha had an excuse of a story that outlasted its welcome by many episodes. Wandering between the thriller, psychological drama and erotica genres, the series neither had a strong story, a commendable cast nor a befitting technical team to salvage their efforts to a certain extent. Though the seed idea of a protagonist experiencing hallucinations unable to get over a personal tragedy sounded interesting on paper, Nisha had left a black mark on the digital medium that has genuinely empowered out of the box stories.

The Office – Hotstar: Check Binged Rating

Not one, but two seasons of the Indian adaptation of the globally popular sitcom series were made in the same year and the results weren’t quite surprising either. The makers of the series clearly didn’t know how to marry the US backdrop to an Indian setting and the lack of clarity showed. The series was neither funny nor realistic, neither old-fashioned nor modern. The story was about the branch of a private firm that wasn’t performing quite well for the company, but the setting here reminded the viewer of an old-fashioned government office where everyone discussed everything under the sun beyond work. Mukul Chadda’s unfunny act only added to the agony of the spectator.

Mind the Malhotras – Amazon Prime: Check Binged Rating

A Hindi adaptation of the popular Israeli series La Famiglia, Mind the Malhotras was also a show where the Indian context didn’t feel relevant to the average viewer. The story of a couple who go through a reality check with their marriage just because their multiple friends are going through divorces was a far-fetched idea that needed the right element of wit and crisp writing for it to be believable. Despite the comic timing of its lead actors Cyrus Sahukar and Mini Mathur, the series didn’t have any fireworks to boast of. The imbalance between exaggeration and subtle humour wasn’t what the doctor ordered for the day.

Mymarapu – Sony LIV: Check Binged Rating

A strong contender to be the worst web series of 2019, the Telugu web series Mymarapu is about a non-commital youngster’s unsuccessful tryst with love in the US. Lazily written one-liners referring to popular Telugu films, loosely established characters that don’t have any basis whatsoever and a mind-boggling sci-fi twist to the rom-com where the protagonist erases only a particular episode of her past – are reasons enough to avoid this catastrophic series that underestimates its audience’s intelligence way too much. For a series that didn’t even have merit to be a short film, you wonder why someone would have invested in the project in the first place!!
