Since its inception, Bollywood is well known for having made some fine romantic films. But some of these offbeat films were not lucky enough to garner both critical and commercial acclaim at the time of their release because of their rather unconventional treatment or premise.
We have collated a list of five such offbeat romantic Hindi movies some of which were somewhat underappreciated by a segment of audiences when they were first released. You can watch these films on various Indian OTT platforms.
Lamhe (Streaming on Amazon Prime Video)
When this Yash Chopra’s directorial released in the year 1991, it reportedly did moderate business in India. It’s often called a film that was much ahead of its times. However, later the film achieved cult status and is considered by many as Yash Chopra’s finest film of his illustrious career. Starring Anil Kapoor and Sridevi (in a double role) in the lead roles, watch this gem in case you still, for some reason, haven’t.
Main, Meri Patni… Aur Woh! (Streaming on Amazon Prime Video)
An endearing love story that follows a simple man (Rajpal Yadav) who suffers from an inferiority complex owing to his short height. He marries a beautiful and taller woman (Rituparna Sengupta). Things take an interesting turn when his wife’s well-groomed and outgoing friend (Kay Kay Menon) inadvertently enters their happy life and worsens the husband’s insecurities.
Socha Na Tha (Streaming on Zee5)
A light-hearted and feel-good rom-com done right. The film touches upon the subject of arranged marriages in India in a unique and humorous way. This was the feature film directorial debut of Imtiaz Ali and the acting debut of the underrated actor Abhay Deol.
Raincoat (Streaming on Hoichoi)
The film follows two lovers (played by Ajay Devgn and Aishwarya Rai) who are separated by circumstances but meet one day. The woman is now happily married, and the man is now a successful entrepreneur. But there seems to be more to their story than meets the eye. A simple story narrated well by Rituparno Ghosh.
Akaash Vani (Streaming on Amazon Prime Video)
This was Luv Ranjan’s second directorial film after the immensely successful ‘Pyaar Ka Punchnama’. The story revolves around a girl (Nushrratt Bharuccha) who belongs to a conservative family. Despite her unwillingness to get married because of romantic feelings for her college mate (Kartik Aaryan), still she reluctantly marries another man of her parents’ choice. With an unhappy married life, will she be able to gather courage for another chance to follow her dreams?
