Over a period of the last two decades, the audiences globally have witnessed a spate of superhero films with impressive production values. Right from Christopher Nolan’s brilliant Dark Knight trilogy to the advent of the MCU’s superhero movies starting from Robert Downey Jr’s ‘Ironman’ to ‘Captain America’ and the ‘Avengers’ film series.
On the other hand, intermittently, there have also been a few offbeat superhero films that also impressed the viewers with their unique treatment of the genre. In this article, we have collated a list of five such offbeat superhero movies (in no particular order) which you can stream on various Indian OTT platforms.
Unbreakable (Streaming on Disney+ Hotstar)
The film starring Bruce Willis was ‘The Sixth Sense’ director M. Night Shyamalan’s take on the superhero genre. This was the first film of the ‘Unbreakable’ trilogy, the other two being ‘Spilt’ (2016) and ‘Glass’ (2019). ‘Unbreakable’ revolves around a seemingly ordinary security guard (Bruce Willis), who miraculously escapes death in a fatal train crash. An eccentric comic book maniac (Samuel L. Jackson) tries to convince the security guard of his unknown superhuman abilities.
Bhavesh Joshi Superhero (Streaming on Netflix)
The film was directed by gifted filmmaker Vikramaditya Motwane (Lootera, Sacred Games). When an idealistic member Bhavesh Joshi of a small vigilante group becomes the target of water mafia, another group member and his friend rises to the occasion and trains himself to achieve what Bhavesh Joshi couldn’t, and to bring the perpetrators to justice.
V for Vendetta (Streaming on Hungama Play)
It’s a highly rated yet relatively offbeat flick helmed by James McTeigue and written by the Wachowskis (Matrix directors). The film is set in a dystopian future and follows a masked freedom fighter with superhuman abilities ‘V’ (Hugo Weaving), who takes a working-class woman (Natalie Portman) under his wing. His mission is to ignite a revolution against British tyranny.
Chronicle (Streaming on Google Play & YouTube)
This film is a refreshing take on the superhero genre which beautifully uses found-footage narrative style and follows the story of three high-school friends who, by a stroke of luck, gain incredible superpowers. How they use their newly found superpowers for good or bad and how it affects their morality and relationship, forms the rest of the plot.
Watchmen (Streaming on Netflix)
‘Watchmen’ was Zack Snyder’s first tryst with the superhero genre before he directed ‘Man of Steel’, ‘Batman vs Superman: Dawn of Justice’, and ‘Justice League’. The dystopian film follows a group of former superheroes who uncover a dangerous conspiracy when one of them is murdered.
