5 Must-Watch & Underrated 90s Indian Movies to Stream on OTT (Part-4)

With the ever-growing content libraries of Indian OTT giants like Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, Disney Plus Hotstar, SonyLIV, and Zee5, etc., you may have already seen most of the recent Indian films streaming on these platforms.

But alongside well known post-2k Indian films, there are many movies streaming on Indian OTT platforms which were released during the 1990s period and yet they remain underrated. In our ‘Underrated 90s Indian Movies’ series of write-ups, we have compiled another list of five such relatively underrated yet brilliant Indian movies from the 90s which you can watch on various Indian OTT platforms.

Hum Hain Rahi Pyar Ke, 1993 (Streaming on Amazon Prime Video, Disney+ Hotstar, MX Player, YuppTV, Shemaroo Me)

Helmed by Mahesh Bhatt, the family entertainer follows a bunch of naughty orphaned kids who are taken care of by their young maternal uncle (Aamir Khan). One day, they visit a carnival and befriend and bring home a runaway bride (Juhi Chawla) without the knowledge of their uncle. All hell breaks loose when their uncle comes to know about the secret.

Gumrah, 1993 (Streaming on Netflix, Amazon Prime Video)

The action drama follows the story of a singing sensation Roshni (Sridevi), who gets wrongfully accused of drug possession and is imprisoned in a foreign country after getting betrayed by her lover (Rahul Roy). While in prison, she gets help from a street-smart thief (Sanjay Dutt) and a lawyer (Anupam Kher) and together they plan to get her out by any means.

Earth, 1998 (Streaming on Voot)

Directed by Deepa Mehta, the events of the film are set in Lahore around the time of the partition of India in 1947. The story is narrated from the perspective of an eight-year-old rich Parsi girl Lenny, who witnesses a tragic love triangle between the Ice Candy Man Dil Nawaz (Aamir Khan), masseur Hassan (Rahul Khanna), and her caretaker maid Shanta (Nandita Das). Aamir Khan’s spellbinding act in the film’s climax is every cinephile’s delight.

Raat, 1992 (Streaming on Zee5, Eros Now)

The only horror film on this list, ‘Raat’ was directed by maverick filmmaker Ram Gopal Varma. The film revolves around a college-going girl (Revathi), who begins to exhibit ‘strange’ behavior after her family moves to a new house. When the goings-on turn ‘dead’ serious, her family is forced to take the help of an exorcist (Om Puri).

Sardari Begum, 1996 (Streaming on Amazon Prime Video)

Helmed by veteran filmmaker Shyam Benegal, the musical drama follows the story of a thumri singer Sardari Begum (Kiran Kher), who is killed by a violent mob during a riot. Her life story is narrated in a flashback sequence when a reporter investigates the incident. The film also featured Smriti Mishra, Amrish Puri, Rajit Kapur, and Kumud Mishra, amongst others.
