1. Karwaan (2018)
One of the recent films of the brilliant actor Irrfan Khan, it’s an adorable, understated comedy film that follows a road journey of three unalike personalities.
One is a reserved IT employee (beautifully underplayed by Dulquer Salmaan), second is the carefree driver (played by the dependable Irrfan Khan) and third is the effervescent youngster (played by Mithila Palkar).
The film is a light-hearted entertainer that you won’t regret watching.
2. Rocket Singh: Salesman of the Year (2009)
Helmed by the immensely talented Shimit Amin, who had previously directed the blockbuster sports film ‘Chak De! India’, the film revolves around an academically weak graduate who lands up a job as a salesman in a big computer company.
The film features Ranbir Kapoor in an amazingly written and acted role alongside a first-rate supporting cast which includes Prem Chopra, Gauahar Khan, Manish Chaudhary, Naveen Kaushik, D. Santosh, Mukesh S. Bhatt, and Shazahn Padamsee amongst others.
The film was an authentic depiction of the life of a salesperson in the Indian corporate world narrated in a comical way.
3. Katha (1983)
Directed by Padma Bhushan Awardee Sai Paranjape and featuring the mesmerizing trio of Naseeruddin Shah, Farooq Shaikh, and Deepti Naval, ‘Katha’ is a heart-warming and a feel-good comedy film.
Set amidst the backdrop of a Mumbai chawl, the film revolves around a love triangle between a diffident clerk (played by Naseeruddin Shah), his street-smart and charismatic friend (played by Farooq Shaikh) and a beautiful chawl girl (played by Deepti Naval).
It’s a timeless classic that truly deserves to be on this list.
4. Choti Si Baat (1976)
Another adorable romantic comedy which is in the same league as ‘Katha’, this one is helmed by Basu Chatterjee (the man behind films like ‘Shaukeen’ and ‘Ek Ruka Hua Faisla’).
The film follows an extremely shy man (Amol Palekar), who is madly in love with a woman (Vidya Sinha). As they get to know each other, the woman’s charming colleague (Asrani) tries to woo her and that’s when the amusing chaos ensues.
Out of despair, the protagonist takes help from a retired colonel (Ashok Kumar), who trains and grooms him to help him win the woman of his dreams.
5. Pushpak (1987)
A silent, black comedy film starring the brilliant actor Kamal Haasan and directed by Singeetam Srinivasa Rao, the film narrates the story of an unemployed graduate who grabs the opportunity to take over the life of a rich man.
Things get even more interesting when an assassin mistakes him for the rich man he is hired to kill. Besides winning three Filmfare Awards (South), ‘Pushpak’ rightfully won the National Film Award for ‘Best Popular Film Providing Wholesome Entertainment’.
Regarded as a benchmark in creativity and its dialogue-less lead performance, the film has achieved cult following over the years. Even the celebrated filmmaker Satyajit Ray had once applauded the film.
