In an over saturated market of streaming services that provide us with the hip and popular movies of current times, MUBI stands out as an independent platform for people who love obscure, cult classic cinema of the past and present.
MUBI which was originally founded by Efe Cakarel in 2007 came to Indian audiences in December of 2019 and has since steadily gained subscribers because of its simple concept as well as eminent movie collection.
MUBI works differently from its peers, instead of bombarding you with hundreds of movies each week it simply offers you 60 highly distinguished movies that are only available to watch for 30 days.
Each day two new movies are selected by a film curator to replace the last ones. In India they have two categories – World and India; one for world cinema that includes a host of non-English indie movies and the other for Indian films that are critical masterpieces in their own right.
It acts a lot like a local film festival for cinephiles who prefer quality over quantity and are looking beyond the “Top Ten Lists” for lesser known cultural gems from all over the world.
MUBI members have access to The Notebook, a digital publication that reviews and critiques films and more recently they launched the MUBI Library which offers a host of films that one might’ve missed earlier or wishes to re-discover from the MUBI archives.
The layout of the site is simple as each movie offered is accompanied with in-depth reviews, plot synopses as well as trailers for you to choose. It also has personally recommended collections of movies by directors and artists from around the world in addition to categories such as ‘Parallel Cinema’, ‘New Voices’ and ‘Women of Indian Cinema’.
Currently some of the films it has in its collection are Moneyball (2011), French Dressing (1964), Olla (2019), Ankhon Dekhi (2013), Mukti Bhawan (2016), Anubhav(1971) and Galige (1994) among others.
The website only offers one subscription model for now; Rs 499 per month but you can get a 7 day free trial before you decide to commit.
If you are looking for state-of-the-art, hand-picked films, documentaries and stories from across the globe to give you a taste of local cinema and culture then look no further, MUBI is the answer.
