The much-awaited trailer of one of this year’s most anticipated films, ‘83‘, dropped on social media this morning. The film that recounts that defining period in the history of Indian cricket, when the Indian cricket team lifted the 1983 World Cup, releases in theatres on 24th December, 2021. Kabir Khan’s labour of love will finally see the light of day, to the delight of both, cinema and cricket lovers in India.
The trailer shows that Kabir Khan has captured even the tiny details before India’s ultimate moment of cricketing glory. How nobody believed in the Indian team, the shabby treatment they received from the organisers, and how even the Indian team members didn’t believe in themselves. There are splashes of humour and light-hearted moments too in the trailer. It is also the first time we catch glimpses of Pankaj Tripathi as the Indian Cricket Team manager.
However, the thing that grabs the most attention in the trailer is the way lead Ranveer Singh has nailed the mannerisms, diction and deep, gravelly voice unique to Kapil Dev, then captain of the team and star of the 1983 World Cup. When he says “We are here to win”, at the team press conference, and then says it again, he sounds breathtakingly similar to Kapil Dev. Watch the trailer below, and you’ll know.
The trailer also gives us a glimpse of Deepika Padukone as Kapil Dev’s wife, Romi. The actress has a cameo in the film. 83 stars Ranveer Singh, Tahir Raj Bhasin, Saqib Saleem, Boman Irani, Harrdy Sandhu, Ammy Virk, Pankaj Tripathi, Jatin Sarna, Sahil Khattar, Jiiva, Chirag Patil, Dinker Sharma, Nishant Dahiya, Dhairya Karwa, R Badree, among others. Chirag Patil is portraying his father Sandeep Patil in the film, hence the uncanny resemblance.
’83 is directed by Kabir Khan, and produced by Reliance Entertainment, Phantom Films and Kabir Khan Films. 83 will hit theatres on December 24 in Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada and Malayalam, and in 3D too.
