There are a lot of books that are banned in India. Some of them have political reasons while some are banned due to laziness. Yes, you read that right, laziness.
A literary gem and one of the finest books of the last century is DH Lawrence‘s Lady Chatterley’s Lover. It is erotica which was too sensational for those in the 1920s and thus they banned the book. The British government banned the book for obscenity not only in British territory but also India.
At that time, people saw it only as vulgar text without acknowledging the literary values behind it. But it was only decades later that some people restarted the conversation and the ban was lifted. But mind you that the ban was lifted only in the UK and no discussion took place in India.
So due to laziness, Lady Chatterley’s Lover is obscene enough to be banned even in today’s India.
Regardless, Netflix is making a film on the same erotic book. Yes, Lady Chatterley’s Lover is getting adapted into a film that will land on Netflix on the 2nd of December. Needless to say, it will stream in India too as it is a Netflix original.
