Netflix’s ‘365 Days‘ (Polish- 365 Dni) made it to the top three most viewed. It was called as Polish ‘Fifty Shades Of Grey.’ The plot follows a man willing to imprison a woman and granting her 365 days to fall in love with him.
A petition to remove this erotic film from Netflix has received nearly 70000 signatures. The Change.org petition criticises the controversial plot of the movie for ‘glorifying Stockholm Syndrome and abuse’ and describes its streaming on Netflix as a ‘mockery’ for all victims and survivors of sexual assault and abuse. “For those who have watched it, we know he talks about child trafficking, sedates her, imprisons her, sexually assaults her and has sexual relations with her without consent,” the petition reads. “The main character also uses abuse tactics such as gas lighting, coercion, reproductive coercion and Stockholm Syndrome to financially, physically, sexually, emotionally and digitally abuse the woman he had taken.” The ultimate aim of this petition is to takedown ‘365 Days’ from Netflix at any cost.
Earlier, Welsh singer, Duffy wrote an open letter to Netflix Chief Executive Mr Reed Hastings, calling for the film’s withdrawal from the platform. “It grieves me that Netflix provides a platform for such ‘cinema’, that eroticizes kidnapping and distorts sexual violence and trafficking as a ‘sexy’ movie. I just can’t imagine how Netflix could overlook how careless, insensitive and dangerous this is,” wrote Duffy. She also revealed her own story of being drugged, raped and staying captive for weeks, similar to what has been shown in the movie. In response to this controversy, a Netflix spokesperson had previously said that they were not involved in the production but merely licensed it for their platform. “Members can choose what they do and do not want to watch by setting maturity filters at a profile level and removing specific titles to protect from content they feel is too mature,” the spokesperson added further.
‘365 Days’ gained global attention in no time. It spent a month in the top ten most watched and popular films on Netflix. This is surprising because the film received zero percent ratings on RottenTomatoes!
