‘Firaaq’ was the directorial debut for the talented Nandita Das and she has made a mark with her very first film. The movie came out in 2008 and told the story of the horrible Gujarat riots.
‘Firaaq’ stars actors like Naseeruddin Shah, Sanjay Suri, Raghubir Yadav, Inaamulhaq, Deepti Naval, Paresh Rawal, Shahana Goswami, Nawazuddin Siddiqui, Tisca Chopra and many others. The movie chronicles an honest retelling of the horrific events of the 2002 riots. Firaaq revolves around many characters, the perpetrators, observers and mainly the victims. It shows how the common man was freaked out and how the events affected their lives after.
Nandita Das has done a tremendous job as the writer and director of the movie. The cinematography was handled by Ravi K. Chandran and the editing was done by A. Sreekar Prasad.
Firaaq won two national awards, three awards in the Asian Festival of First Films, the special prize in International Thessaloniki Film Festival and various other awards. It was even banned in Gujarat.
