October was not a good month for Prime Video. They got brutally bashed for the absurd digital release of Ponniyin Selvan 1. Four More Shots Please was bashed badly and failed to garner even a handful of audience. Also, Maja Ma did not come out to be even a decent movie let alone earn good views.
Different platforms have different strategies so we can’t complain much about their marketing campaigns and of course, the Ponniyin Selvan mess.
But what we must talk about is the content. It is not just an October thing but it happened so prominently in the last month that Prime Video should never forget them.
We are talking specifically about Maja Ma. It was the first original film by Prime Video, it had such a prominent superstar as Madhuri Dixit and they badly missed the opportunity of leaving a significant impact.
The reason we are talking about this now is that we have reliable data on the top titles that earned views on the platform.
Lord Of The Rings film trilogy dominated Prime Video last month but even films such as No Time To Die made it to the charts.
Prime Video is extremely potent in the international market simply because they are “bad” at it. They are not at all a prominent OTT platform in the western world and that’s why they remain so away from being a competitive battleground.
It is very very easy for any new film/series to trend high because they don’t have many new titles in the making process.
Still, Maja Ma is nowhere to be observed. The performance of the film was so bad last month that it couldn’t even find any place on the list, let alone be prominent in that.
So the lesson here is, don’t rush. We understand that they wanted to enter the race of “making original films” soon. They got Madhuri Dixit ready too. In 2022, they served their first original movie.
But before shooting, they should have worked on the script. They should have worked on editing the movie. They should have promoted it well.
But alas, nothing of this sort happened and we know the results.
