A Minecraft Movie Boosts Box Office & Players By 35%, Stars Jack Black

A Minecraft Movie — a blockbuster that no one, and we mean no one, predicted. Back in January and February this year, most box office pundits were calling this Jack Black starrer a failure waiting to happen—especially after what went down with Borderlands, which also had Black in its cast. Guess who had the last laugh?

It seems the “so-called” box office and movie theatre experts didn’t account for the insane popularity of the Minecraft game, developed by Mojang Studios—especially among younger audiences. And this section of the crowd is the main reason the movie is killing it at the box office.

A Minecraft Movie is, without a doubt, the saviour theatres didn’t know they wanted, but desperately needed. The first three months of 2025 have been pretty bleak for Hollywood. A lot of hope and hype was pinned on Marvel Studios’ Captain America: Brave New World. But that got crushed too, thanks to dismal reviews post-release.

While Microsoft typically keeps player and sales numbers under wraps, it was known that Minecraft had around 170 million active players. And yet, despite that massive base, the movie’s release sparked a jaw-dropping 35% increase in total players.

The movie has raked in over $550 million globally in just 10 days—which is wild, but definitely a welcome surprise for Legendary Pictures and Warner Bros. Despite its rotten 48% score on Rotten Tomatoes, audiences are loving it. Just goes to show: at the end of the day, it’s the people’s response that really matters most.

Given Minecraft’s massive popularity (especially among younger fans) and a star-studded cast led by Jack Black and Jason Momoa, A Minecraft Movie could very well cross the prestigious $1 billion mark in the days to come. The film also features Emma Myers, Danielle Brooks, and Sebastian Hansen. Stay tuned for more updates!
