‘Red Sparrow’ is a beautiful thriller written by Justin Haythe and directed by Francis Lawrence. It is adapted from the novel of the same name by Jason Matthews that was published in 2013.
Red Sparrow tells the story of Dominika Egorova, who used to be a ballerina in the famous Bolshoi Ballet. She is recruited in the ‘Sparrow School’, an agency under the Russian Intelligence Services that uses young girls as weapons to intrude in enemy lands. In her first mission, she is told to use her body to get in touch with a CIA agent for information. The mission and the growing relationship between Dominika and the CIA agent threatens the security of both the nations.
The film has Jennifer Lawrence in the lead role as Dominika. There are other actors like Joel Edgerton, Matthias Schoenaerts, Charlotte Rampling, Mary-Louise Parker, Ciarán Hinds and Joely Richardson in important roles.
The cinematography is handled by Jo Willems, the editing is done by Alan Edward Bell and the music is composed by James Newton Howard. The film had its theatrical release on the 2nd of March in 2018 and was received by the audiences with much enthusiasm.
Matthew, the writer of the novel, was associated with the CIA previously and he advised the makers on the film. There is historical basis of Russian Sexionage and the contemporary use of ‘Kompromat’. It is, therefore, an engaging spy thriller with much authenticity.
