Aamir Khan’s highly anticipated film ‘Laal Singh Chaddha’ is all set for its grand theatrical release on 11th August. The ‘Forrest Gump’ official remake is the perfectionist actor’s next acting project after a four-year hiatus since the 2018 film ‘Thugs of Hindostan’. And the ‘Lagaan’ actor is promoting the film in a big way.
While the precise box-office status of ‘Laal Singh Chaddha’ can only be ascertained after the film’s release, Aamir Khan’s diehard fans and cinema lovers in general are rooting for the film’s critical and commercial success. And in case that indeed happens, there is one rather understated factor which is bound to immensely contribute to the film’s potential box-office success. Besides Aamir Khan of course. We are talking about the casting of the talented performer Naga Chaitanya. Let us explain why we think so despite not being the lead role or even a parallel lead role.
You might already be aware that Naga Chaitanya is playing the role of an Army officer who is Laal Singh Chaddha’s close friend. It was a nicely written role that was originally essayed by Mykelti Williamson, and his character was called Bubba in ‘Forrest Gump’.
Interestingly, before Naga Chaitanya’s casting was finalized in May 2021, popular actor comedian Yogi Babu and before that Vijay Sethupathi were also apparently offered the same role in the movie. However, both of them couldn’t do it for certain reasons.
Is it a mere coincidence that all these three actors, who were considered for Bubba’s role, are well known names who primarily work in the South Indian film industry? Seems unlikely. A more logical reason could be that the makers of ‘Laal Singh Chaddha’ wanted to intentionally rope in an actor from the Telugu or Tamil film industry. Because in doing that, their presence would be an enticing factor for the prospective audiences from these regions. In this case, it’s Naga Chaitanya’s casting.
A filmmaker and an adept marketer of Aamir Khan’s calibre must be totally aware of some recent films from South India such as ‘KGF 2’, ‘RRR’, etc. making an outstanding mark in the Hindi speaking belts. Some time back, Aamir Khan had also happily promoted S.S. Rajamouli’s ‘RRR’ before its release. Moreover, the Telugu version of ‘Laal Singh Chaddha’ is being presented by none other than veteran actor Chiranjeevi.
Aamir Khan had also arranged the film’s special preview in Hyderabad, which was attended by Nagarjuna, Chiranjeevi, S.S Rajamouli, and Sukumar besides himself and Naga Chaitanya. Furthermore, Aamir Khan was also recently seen in an event with veteran actor Kamal Haasan. So, it is apparent that significant efforts are also being made to market ‘Laal Singh Chaddha’ for Telugu and Tamil movie goers. And there’s nothing wrong with that. In fact, it’s a sensible strategy which other Hindi filmmakers may also replicate.
Some people might opine that the reason for roping in Naga Chaitanya for his role in ‘Laal Singh Chaddha’ might be because this was the way the film’s screenplay was written by Aamir Khan’s ‘Rang De Basanti’ co-star Atul Kulkarni. But again, the question is: why was the character written to belong from a South Indian region when the makers could have easily avoided the relatively tricky casting hassle and considering that there is no dearth of talented actors in the Hindi film industry itself?
So, it’s evident that Aamir Khan has clearly understood the importance of promoting a Hindi movie for audiences in the South regions especially Telugu and Tamil cinephiles. Naga Chaitanya’s bang-on casting, which corroborates the theory, could prove to be the trump card for the potential box-office success of ‘Laal Singh Chaddha’.
