It’s an unusual face-off this week, on one end, a soft-spoken romance with R. Madhavan in Aap Jaisa Koi, and on the other, the return of India’s favourite espionage drama with Special OPS Season 2. And while both shows are eyeing your weekend attention, let’s be honest, this isn’t exactly an equal match.
Here’s why.
Special OPS already comes with a loyal, built-in audience. Helmed by Neeraj Pandey and fronted by Kay Kay Menon, the series has long been a fan-favourite for its gritty action and tight storytelling. Season 2 is expected to be leaner, meaner, and even more calculated, exactly what its audience craves.
Meanwhile, Aap Jaisa Koi is trying something harder: to woo the romance crowd, a section that’s lately felt ignored on OTTs, especially by Netflix, which has developed a slightly patchy track record when it comes to Indian love stories. The problem isn’t the cast (Madhavan is always a win) but whether audiences are still patient enough for slow-burn stories in the age of algorithms and explosions.
And let’s not forget the timing. With Panchayat’s lukewarm reception and Prime Video’s current PR headaches, Disney+ Hotstar has a real chance to dominate, and Special OPS seems ready to lead that charge.
So, who will reign?
Let’s call it early, Special OPS has the upper hand. Big fanbase, returning faces, proven formula. Unless Aap Jaisa Koi stirs up something unexpected, it might just be a quiet release next to a very loud comeback.
