Women filmmakers like Ruchi Narain (Guilty), Anvita Dutt (Bulbbul) and Megha Ramaswamy (What Are The Odds) made their directorial début recently on Netflix. Seasoned filmmakers have also worked with Netflix like Leena Yadav (Parched, Teen Patti, Shabd) who made ‘Rajma Chawal’ which was a Netflix Original and Alankrita Shrivastava’s ‘Dolly Kitty Aur Woh Chamakte Sitare’ and ‘Bombay Begums’ are about to have direct-to-digital release on the global streaming giant soon.
Netflix’s support for Indian female filmmakers is commendable and much needed. These incredible women bring a whole another perspective to their work that is otherwise missing in a male dominated industry. Their portrayal of societal issues often deals with them in a critical yet realistic manner. Netflix believes in focusing on original and passionate voices and it’s pretty evident it’s not afraid to open the platform even for first time female filmmakers.
Women are making their mark in every field and the entertainment industry is no less. They are now starting to get the long due appreciation and identification for their work. Whether it’s Meghna Gulzar (Raazi), Shonali Bose (Margarita With A Straw), Gauri Shinde (Dear Zindagi), Reema Kagti (Gold) or Zoya Akhtar (Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara, Gully Boy), they have all proven to be outstanding at what they do. With the OTT platforms and their format, it’s time for women power to outshine.
