If you have watched all three Films of the Apu Trilogy, here is a film that you will like. ‘Abhijatrik’ is a film that extends the story of Apu further and goes into more detail about his life. It is based on ‘Aparajito’ by Bibhutibhushan Bandyopadhyay whose stories are adapted into the three famous films ‘Pather Panchali’, ‘Aparajito’ and ‘Apur Sansar’. The film is available on Zee5
The film is directed by Subhrajit Mitra who wrote the screenplay as well. He extended the story further himself and added his own flavors to it, like adding Shankar from ‘Chander Pahar’ or ‘The Mountain Of Moon’ to Apu’s story, thus creating a ‘Bibhutibhushan Cinematic Universe’.
Abhijatrik stars Arjun Chakroborty in the lead role and has actors like Sabyasachi Chakroborty, Arpita Chatterjee and Ditipriya Roy in other important roles.
The film tells the story of Apu after he marries Aparna. Even After her death, he continues to have imaginary comversations with his wife. Kajol, the son of Aparajito is born and they reconcile just as the happy ending of Apur Sansar. Apu had a desire to see the whole world. He had always a great deal of wander lust troubling his mind. In Abhijatrik he pursues his dream of travelling the world. This time he has his son Kajol as his companion. They meet Shankar, who has come back from a mine full of diamonds in Africa.
The film has wonderful visuals and it is entirely shot in black and white. The cinematography is handled by Supratim Bhol and he has done a wonderful job. The music of the movie is given by Bickram Ghosh and additional Sitar tracks are given by Anoushka Shankar, the daughter of Pt. Ravi Shankar who gave the music to pather Panchali. It’s a legacy well kept.
