Last year’s acclaimed Hollywood film ‘The Woman King’ has finally premiered on Netflix in India. The film comes to Netflix in India a full one and a half months after it premiered on Netflix in the US. ‘The Woman King’ is a historical action drama film, and tells the story of the bravery of the ‘Agojie’, a legendary all-female warrior unit that protected the West African kingdom of Dahomey during the 17th to 19th centuries. The cast of the film boasts a stellar cast, comprising names such as Violet Davis, Lashana Lynch, Thuso Mbedu, Sheila Atim, Hero Fiennes Tiffin, and John Boyega. Violet Davis plays the General of the Agojie, who trains young female warriors to fight their enemies.
The film is directed by Gina Prince-Bythewood and written by Dana Stevens, based on a story she wrote with Maria Bello. Critics have described ‘The Woman King’ variously as “Braveheart with black females”, “A crowd-pleasing epic”, and “The magnitude and the awe this movie inspires are what epics like Gladiator and Braveheart are all about.” The film has a 94% rating on reviews aggregator, Rotten Tomatoes.
The official synopsis of ‘The Woman King’ reads, “In the 1800s, a group of all-female warriors protects the African kingdom of Dahomey with skills and fierceness unlike anything the world has ever seen. Faced with a new threat, Gen. Nanisca trains the next generation of recruits to fight against a foreign enemy that’s determined to destroy their way of life.”
