The Malayalam film industry has been consistently churning out some well-made movies. Recently, we have witnessed a fine bend of critically acclaimed and commercially successful Malayalam movies such as ‘Bheeshma Parvam’, ‘Hridayam’, ‘Jana Gana Mana’, ‘Pada’, ‘Salute’, and ‘Thallumaala’, amongst others.
One highly rated Malayalam language Indian film, whose name is not mentioned above, has now attracted international attention. The film has made its well-deserved debut on the top 50 international narrative feature films list of 2022 on the Auckland-based movies-centric social platform Letterboxd.
And the Malayalam film’s name is ‘Mukundan Unni Associates’, which currently holds Rank 40 on the coveted Letterboxd top international movies list. And in doing that, the critically admired Indian movie has outranked some fine films such as ‘Decision to Leave’ (Rank 43), and another Indian film – ‘Vikram’ (Rank 47), etc.
And the interesting thing about ‘Mukundan Unni Associates’ cracking the Letterboxd top 50 list is that it has done so only after it became available on the Disney+ Hotstar OTT platform since last week.
The said Letterboxd top 50 international films list has been topped by ‘Everything Everywhere All at Once’ (Rank 1) followed by ‘Kadaisi Vivasayi’ (Rank 2), ‘Aftersun’ (Rank 3), ‘Argentina, 1985’ (Rank 10), ‘RRR’ (Rank 12), ‘The Banshees of Inisherin’ (Rank 13), ‘Top Gun: Maverick’ (Rank 16), ‘TAR’, (Rank 17), and ‘The Fabelmans’ (Rank 18), amongst globally acclaimed other films.
Coming back to ‘Mukundan Unni Associates’, it’s a dark comedy movie which follows the story of a young and ambitious advocate named Mukundan Unni (adeptly played by Vineet Sreenivasan), who makes his area of specialization to be accident insurance claims. With no moral boundaries, the lawyer can go to any lengths to become rich and successful.
