Parasite, one of the most-talked about movies of 2019, is all set to arrive online in the form of a limited series for HBO. HBO and Bong Joon Ho, maker of Parasite, are in advanced talks to seal the deal.
The decision to go with HBO was taken after an all-out bidding war between HBO and Netflix resulted in the former emerging winner. Netflix had separately been pursuing Bong Joon Ho aggressively to obtain streaming rights for Parasite, but the wily South Korean wouldn’t budge.
Bong Joon Ho will collaborate on the Parasite series with Adam McKay, the man behind HBO’s ‘Succession’, Golden Globe 2020 winner for Best Drama series.
Parasite has been on everybody’s mind since the time the Korean movie became a runaway hit and won a clutch of awards at every awards it was nominated in. It won the Palme d’Or at Cannes, the first movie in a long time to emerge the 100% unanimous choice for the honour. Reportedly, it received a 17-minute standing ovation at the end of screening at Cannes. It is also the frontrunner for the Best Foreign Language Film Academy Award at the Oscars this year, after having won the best foreign language movie
award at the Globes 2020.
Interest in the movie is sky high. Everyone wants to know when it will stream on Netflix. Even a cursory search through Google will tell you the obvious — where can I stream Parasite, is Parasite available online, is Parasite on Netflix – these and other questions of the ilk are oft-repeated ones with regard to the movie.
So the movie will not make it to Netflix after all, as everyone had assumed. Though a Korean language movie, it will most likely be remade into English, and will stream in the form of a miniseries on HBO.
HBO shows mostly make it to India on Hotstar, so that’s where we should hope to find it, whenever it’s ready for release.
