Actors Will Play It Safe With Darker Roles And Method Acting?

Acting is definitely a commitment, like any other art form. But one thing that stands out is the level of dedication; some devote their lives to the craft while others pursue it as a profession. However, there’s always the question of how dedicated someone needs to be.

There is a concept called method acting, which is often praised yet sometimes criticized, but the act itself is commendable. However, there is a significant ‘IF’—sometimes, method acting can have a psychological effect on the actor.

To offer some examples, Christian Bale and Heath Ledger have both immersed themselves in method acting. When it comes to actresses, someone like Natalie Portman is very discerning about engaging in method acting.

“I’ve gotten very into roles, but I think it’s honestly a luxury that women can’t afford. I don’t think that children or partners would be very understanding of me making everyone call me ‘Jackie Kennedy’ all the time.”

Ryan Gosling has made comments that might influence the future of the industry. He has stated clearly that he won’t be taking on psychologically darker roles.

“I don’t really take roles that are going to put me in some kind of dark place; this moment is what I feel like trying to read the room at home and feel like what is going to be best for all of us. The decisions I make, I make them with Eva, and we make them with our family in mind first.”

We can’t disregard the fact that roles like these can affect the mental health of actors. If actors are staying away from such roles for personal reasons, it is definitely their choice. Ultimately, it won’t really affect the industry significantly. Despite our strictness about who plays a part, names are more replaceable than we realize.
