After Bhonsle, SonyLIV Brings Yet Another Stellar Film, Late Sumitra Bhave’s ‘Dithee’

The most joy provided by OTT platforms is the opportunity to watch stellar films that, for myriad reasons, are not able to get a theatrical release. One such film is Marathi film, ‘Dithee’. Critically acclaimed, with a poignant, hard-hitting story at its core, the film will now be released on SonyLIV. After Bhonsle, Kadakh and Welcome Home, this is another stellar, refreshingly different film that is being premiered by SonyLIV on its platform.

Dithee is the last directorial from distinguished filmmaker Sumitra Bhave. The much-awarded filmmaker passed away in April of this year. The story of Dithee centres on a simple village ironsmith, Ramji (Kishore Kadam), who loses his grownup son to flash floods in his village. The narrative chronicles the pain of loss, the unrelenting grief on the passing away of a loved one, and a slow, gradual coming to terms with tragedy. It is a difficult watch for sure, but one that is amply rewarding for film buffs.

The cast consists of Mohan Agashe, Girish Kulkarni, Amruta Subhash, Anjali Patil, Shashank Shende, Kishore Kadam, Uttara Baokar and Dilip Prabhavalkar. The film is produced by National Award winner, Mohan Agashe. Deethi premieres on SonyLIV on 21st May. The Marathi film has English subtitles for the benefit of viewers of all languages.

Now a little about Sumitra Bhave – the prolific filmmaker, who’s unfortunately not among us any more, has won 6 International Awards, 11 National Awards and more than 45 State Awards. Teaming up with filmmaker Sunil Sukthankar, she made 17 feature films, more than fifty short films, and four TV serials. Astonishingly enough, Bhave wrote the screenplay for each of the aforementioned content. The filmmaker duo won awards for their films Doghi (1995), Dahavi Fa (2002), Vastupurush (2002), Devrai (2004), Astu (2016) and Kaasav (2017). Bhave also won several individual awards for story, screenplay, lyrics, art direction, costume design and direction. Dithee is Sumitra Bhave’s last directorial work.
