A few days back, we had made our readers aware of the release of Sundance champion ‘CODA’ on the Apple TV+ streaming platform. We had also informed that Tom Hanks’ upcoming post-apocalyptic science-fiction film ‘Finch’ will soon start streaming on Apple TV+.
And now, as per a recent announcement by Apple Original Films and A24, Apple has reportedly closed a deal to release Joel Coen’s solo directorial project ‘The Tragedy of Macbeth’ starring Denzel Washington and Francis McDormand in the lead roles.
Joel Coen has written and directed this on-screen adaptation of William Shakespeare’s shortest tragedy of the same name. The original play revolved around the Scottish general Macbeth’s ambition to become the King of Scotland. To achieve his political dreams, Macbeth kills the King to take the throne. However, the resultant guilt and paranoia engulf him, leading to disastrous consequences.
Academy Award-winning filmmaker Joel Coen had earlier co-directed acclaimed films like ‘Fargo’, ‘The Big Lebowski’, and ‘No Country For Old Men’, etc. along with his brother Ethan Coen. While ‘The Tragedy of Macbeth’ would be the first directorial film without his brother.
The film would star Academy Award-winning actors Denzel Washington and Francis McDormand in the roles of Lord Macbeth and Lady Macbeth, respectively. While Brendon Gleeson will essay the role of King Duncan.
Previously, The Scottish Play has been adapted for the screen multiple times by eminent Hollywood filmmakers including Orson Welles, Akira Kurosawa, and Roman Polanski in their films.
Later, celebrated Indian filmmaker Vishal Bhardwaj adapted the play to make a film called ‘Maqbool’, which was set amidst the backdrop of the Mumbai underworld. The internationally acclaimed film featured Irrfan Khan, Tabu, and Pankaj Kapur in the lead roles.
Thereafter, Vishal Bhardwaj also adapted Shakespeare’s two more plays Othello and Hamlet to make the films namely ‘Omkara’ and ‘Haider’, respectively.
While Joel Coen’s ‘The Tragedy of Macbeth’ is being planned for a theatrical release later this year, and is expected to subsequently stream on the Apple TV+ streaming platform.
Besides ‘The Tragedy of Macbeth’, ‘Finch’ and ‘CODA’, Apple also has some star-studded films like Leonardo Di Caprio’s ‘Killers of the Flower Moon’ and Will Smith’s ‘Emancipation’ under its belt. And the latest addition ‘The Tragedy of Macbeth’ will likely prove to be yet another masterstroke by Apple.
