After Film Festivals & Rotten Tomatoes, ‘The Disciple’ Achieves Another Feat

A few days back, we had made our readers aware of Chaitanya Tamhane’s critically acclaimed movie ‘The Disciple’ being the only Indian film to find a place on the coveted Rotten Tomatoes ‘Best Movies of 2021’ list amongst some of the world’s best 139 international films.

And now, earlier today, it was revealed by the Asian Film Awards Academy official Twitter handle that ‘The Disciple’ along with two other Indian films have been nominated in various categories for the fifteenth edition of the well-known film awards ceremony.

The Disciple’ has bagged the two important ‘Best Film’ and ‘Best Screenplay’ nominations. Concurrently, another Indian film ‘Pebbles’ has been nominated for the ‘Best New Director’ (P.S. Vinothraj) category while the third Indian title ‘Churuli’ aka ‘Labyrinth’ has been nominated for the ‘Best Production Design’ (Gokuldas) and ‘Best Sound’ (Ranganaath Ravee) categories.

Chaitanya Tamhane’s ‘The Disciple’ narrates the story of Sharad Nerulkar (played by Aditya Modak), who has dedicated his life to become an Indian classical music vocalist. However, he begins to think that, despite his devotion, will he achieve the level of excellence he is aiming for. Last year, the film participated in many international film festivals including the Venice Film Festival where it secured multiple wins including the ‘Best Screenplay’ award. Later, the film was acquired by OTT giant Netflix. So, chances are high that it will win the honors at the Asian Film Awards too.

While ‘Churuli’ is an independent Malayalam language sci-fi mystery thriller that revolves around two cops who get stuck in a terrifying time loop in the titular village, while searching for a wanted criminal. And ‘Pebbles’ is P.S. Vinothraj’s directorial debut film which follows an alcoholic father who undertakes an arduous journey with his son in the backdrop of deserted terrain and scorching heat, to bring his wife back.
