After Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom, Netflix To Adapt August Wilson’s The Piano Lesson

The producers of the much acclaimed Netflix film ‘Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom’ are ready for yet another collaboration with the streaming giant. This new Netflix film is an adaptation of the Pulitzer prize winning play ‘The Piano Lesson’ by August Wilson, the same playwright who wrote ‘Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom’.

Netflix made the announcement with a small video 👇

‘The Piano Lesson’ is a 1987 play and is the fourth one in Wilson’s ‘The Pittsburgh Cycle’. The story is set in 1936 in Pittsburgh and follows the lives of the Charles family, where an heirloom piano, decorated with designs carved by an enslaved ancestor, become a matter of disagreement between a brother and sister, leading to a series of arguments.

‘The Piano Lesson’ has earlier been adapted into a film in 1995 starring Charles S. Dutton and Alfre Woodard in the lead and directed by Lloyd Richards. Reportedly, the latest Netflix adaptation of the play will come after its feature on Broadway with the cast of Samuel L. Jackson, Danielle Brooks and John David Washington. The same cast is expected in the film that will supposedly debut later in 2022.

‘The Piano Lesson’ is the third play of Wilson’s ‘The Pittsburgh Cycle’ to be adapted into a film following ‘Fences’ (2016) and ‘Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom’ (2020).

Further details of the cast, crew and release date of ‘The Piano Lesson’ are yet to be revealed by Netflix.
