Though it is “Night Country,” the fourth season was definitely showing light to the future of the franchise. Despite failures in seasons two and three, “Night Country” managed to bring the ‘classic’ title back. Now, HBO shares an exciting update about the “True Detective” series.
“True Detective” will be back for a fifth season; HBO just renewed the show.
In terms of being the showrunner, Issa López will be back for the fifth season. It was also previously discussed that she struck an overall deal with the network, and if Issa can make more shows like this, HBO will be happy to have her by their side.
Now, the show was destined to be renewed, managing to pile ginormous statistics and even dethroning the first season as the most-watched season on HBO, with 12.7M viewers across all platforms.
Even the finale episode gained 3.2M viewership, just on Sunday, and just from the US audience.
“True Detective” is successful for one reason: it not only prevents itself from deification but also doesn’t suffer from Sherlock or Poirot syndrome. The show manages to get the best and worst of the detectives, and multiple parallel storylines prevent the story from getting stale.
And talking about storytelling, Issa has been really vocal about the show. “I believe that every storyteller has a very specific, peculiar, and unique relation to the stories they create, and whatever his reactions are, he’s entitled to them. That’s his prerogative. I wrote this with profound love for the work he made and love for the people that loved it.”
